The Library Does This for Free
The Greater Victoria Public Library runs a free self-serve digitizing space at its Esquimalt branch. With a library card you can scan photographs and slides and transfer tapes yourself, at no cost. For some collections that is genuinely the better answer, and I would rather say so.
Free Costs You Time Instead
The library equipment is real equipment and it works. What you are spending instead of money is your own hours, one item at a time, in a booked slot, at a branch, doing every step yourself.
For thirty photographs that is a pleasant afternoon. For a thousand photographs it is dozens of afternoons, and most people who start that way stop somewhere around week three with half a shoebox done and the rest back in the cupboard.
The other limit is the awkward material. A booked slot with self-serve equipment is not the place to work out what to do with a tape that squeals, a reel that smells of vinegar, or an album whose pages you do not want to take apart.
Side by side, honestly
This is a comparison between paying money and paying time. Which one you have more of is most of the answer.
For a small collection in good condition, the library is free and it works. If that is what you have, use it. I mean that.
Where the Free Option Runs Out
Volume
Self-serve is fine for a shoebox. A thousand photographs at your own hands is a project measured in months, and most of them stall.
Condition
A tape with mould on the pack or a reel that has started to shrink needs handling before it is played. Getting that wrong on your only copy is not recoverable.
Knowing it worked
Self-serve means you are also the quality check. Finding out a year later that half the scans were at the wrong setting is a real and common outcome.
Use the Library If This Sounds Like You
You have a small collection. A shoebox rather than a basement. The photographs are ordinary prints in reasonable condition, the tapes play, and nothing is stuck or mouldy.
You have time and you do not mind the work. Some people genuinely enjoy going through it themselves, and there is something to be said for handling every picture.
Money is tight. Free is free, and I am not going to talk somebody into paying me when the free option would do the job.
If any of that is you, go to Esquimalt and use it with my blessing. Come to me when the volume, the condition, or the time stops making that work.

Why would you tell me about a free alternative?
Because you will find out anyway, and I would rather you heard it from me with an honest account of when it is the better choice. If I talked you into paying for something the library would have done fine, you would not recommend me to anybody, and recommendations are most of my work.
Can I do the easy ones myself and pay you for the rest?
Yes, and it is a sensible way to spend your money. Bring everything, we will separate the awkward formats and the fragile pieces, I will quote you just for those, and you take the straightforward prints home to do at your own pace.
Is the library equipment any good?
It is decent equipment and it is properly set up. The limits are not the machines, they are the model: your time, one item at a time, in a booked slot, with nobody to ask when something odd turns up.
